Latest R&D Presented at IMechE 12th International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging
Cummins Turbo Technologies were proud to be platinum sponsors at this year’s 12th international conference on turbochargers and turbocharging, organised by The Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and held at The Kia Oval, London from 17 – 18 May.
Five papers were presented at the conference by Cummins Turbo Technologies which focussed on Research and Development that will deliver future benefits to on- and off-highway markets. The papers presented included:
- Development of a high temperature turbocharger for heavy duty applications
- The development of a long route exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) turbocharger for commercial engine applications
- Explicit dynamic finite element simulation of turbocharger containment and wheel burst
- The effect of oil film instability on power loss prediction of turbocharger rotor-floating ring bearing system
- Turbocharger compressor inlet and outlet pipe length & volume, and the effects on the characteristics and location of surge.
Next Generation Technologies were also on display at the conference including; Holset M²™ Two Stage with Rotary Turbine Control (RTC), Series 400 Holset VGT™, Series 500 Electric Wastegate with Twin Port technology, Series 150 Wastegate and Series 250 Wastegate, and Mechanical and Electric Waste Heat Recovery Turbine Expanders.
The conference was a great opportunity for Cummins to demonstrate its research and development for future technologies as well as gain insights into other R&D within the industry.
Pioneering Two-Stage Technology Showcased at Supercharging Conference
The 20th Annual Supercharging Conference organised by Dresden University, took place once again at the International Congress Centre, Dresden, Germany from the 24 – 25 of September 2015. This year, Cummins Turbo Technologies not only showcased its next generation technologies but also presented a paper at the Conference, ‘Development of Cummins Turbo Technologies M2 Integrated Two-Stage Architecture using Rotary Turbine Control (RTC) Technology for the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel Engine’. The Holset M²™ Two Stage system with Rotary Turbine Control is suited for light duty commercial applications offering similar performance to the Variable Geometry turbo and with the capability to remain well within the stringent emission legislation. The RTC enables dynamic thermal management control for exhaust regeneration whilst ensuring that fuel consumption is low. The paper highlights a few of the system and product development challenges involved in the two-stage turbochargers recent development. To read a full version of the paper click here. The products showcased at the conferences included the Next Generation Series 400 Holset VGT™, the Holset M²™ Two Stage System with Rotary Turbine Control (RTC), the Electric Wastegate and both the Mechanical and Electrical Waste Heat Recovery Turbine Expander. To accompany these next generation technologies was an animation demonstrating the workings and design of the Holset M²™ Two Stage with RTC. This pioneering integrated technology was developed in partnership with Cummins Engine Business and Nissan, specifically for use on the 2016 Nissan TITAN XD pickup truck and was officially launched at the Mid-America Trucking Show in March 2015.
Next Generation Holset VGT™ Unveiled to Construction Market at INTERMAT 2015
Cummins Turbo Technologies unveiled its Next Generation Holset VGT™ to the construction market for the first time at INTERMAT 2015. The Next Generation series 300 variable geometry turbocharger is capable of improving turbo efficiencies by up to 12% at low engine speed as well as delivering reduced CO2 emissions. In addition, this latest solution is 10% lighter than its existing counterpart, creating greater fuel economy. Other turbocharger solutions from Cummins Turbo Technologies introduced to the construction market for the first time at INTERMAT, included the Electric Wastegate Turbocharger and Electric Waste Heat Recovery Turbine Expander. Cummins Turbo Technologies exhibited at INTERMAT from April 20 - 25, as part of the Cummins Components Group, which includes business units Cummins Emission Solutions, Cummins Filtration and Cummins Fuel Systems.

Cummins Turbo Technologies officially launched its new M²™ Two-Stage turbocharger powering the all new 2016 Nissan TITAN XD at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in March.
